LENTEN FAST & ABSTINENCE REGULATION
Canon 1249: Revised Code of Canon Law States:
All members of the Christian faithful in their own way are bound to penance in virtue of divine law; in order that all may be joined in a common observance of penance, penitential days are prescribed in which the Christian faithful in a special way pray, exercise works of piety and charity, and deny themselves by fulfilling their responsibilities more faithfully and especially by observing fast and abstinence according to the norms of the following regulations:
DAYS OF PENANCE IN THE UNITED STATES
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat and also of fast, that is, limited to a single full meal.
The other Fridays of the season are days of abstinence from meat.
The Fridays of the year outside Lent remain days of penance, but each individual may substitute form meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial, or personal penance; this may be physical mortification or temperance or acts of religion, charity or Christian witness.
THOSE BOUND TO FAST AND ABSTAIN
All those who are 14 years old are bound by the law of abstinence (no meat).
The law of fast binds all who are 18 years old and not yet 59 years old.
Medical conditions exempt one from these rules.
