Life
Nights
Right
after our Life Teen Mass ends
(about 7pm) our teens gather for Youth Group.
The High School teens head downstairs to the youth room and
usually
start with a light snack, and then we start the evening off with
ice-breaker relative
to the night’s theme. Life Nights,
as
they are called, involve a rotation of catechetical (teaching), issue
and
social nights. Catechetical nights occur
about every other week, and try to explain various parts of our faith
to the
teens, while issue nights revolve around social justice issues that
affect us
all, like homelessness, violence, sex or drugs and alcohol. But it’s not at all like a classroom
setting. Life nights incorporate a wide
variety of tools from book lessons, to games, role-playing,
story-telling and
music to bring the lessons to life.
Teens often break off into groups of 3 or 4 plus an adult for
small
group discussions, and then get back with the whole group to share
thoughts and
ideas. Sometimes the discussions can get
pretty lively, especially when we get on a hot topic or an emotionally
charged
issue. Those nights the adults can learn
as much as the kids!
Social
nights occur about once a month,
and are just that.. SOCIAL! We might
play kickball or Frisbee, or other sports, listen to music and have
food, play
games, or just talk about ideas and plans for the year and ideas to
keep Life
Nights a place to have fun, to hang with friends and a place to live
out faith.
